Jon Harold Vanderberg
(1942 – 2026)
ARLINGTON, MA – Jon Harold Vanderberg, a lifelong educator, tireless activist, and “compassionate agitator," passed away on March 29, 2026, at the age of 83.
Born on November 1, 1942, in Hart, Michigan, to Olin and Mildred (Spitler) Vanderberg, Jon’s roots were firmly planted in the soil of Western and Southwestern Michigan. A graduate of Portage Central High School and Western Michigan University, Jon dedicated his professional life to the pursuit of knowledge and the empowerment of others. With an advanced degree in the teaching of social studies, he taught in Flint and Southwest Michigan, later serving his community through the Michigan Employment Security Commission and the Michigan Career and Technical Institute. He moved in his final years to Arlington, Massachusetts, to be closer with his daughter and her family while he lived with ongoing health challenges.
Jon was a man of fierce intellect and even fiercer principles. An activist in the American Civil Rights movement, he lived his life as a protest against injustice. Whether volunteering for Howard Wolpe, supporting international humanitarian causes, or fighting with a referee at a soccer game, Jon believed that education and access were fundamental human rights. He was a man who could devour 300 pages of historical literature in a day, yet he was never too busy to engage in a vehement debate over coffee or beer.
He somehow balanced unapologetic realism with active hope, living by Robert Kennedy’s quote "Some men see things as they are and ask why; I dream things that never were and say why not?". Despite his sharp mind for debate, Jon’s guiding philosophy was one of radical love. He believed that every person, even those who struggled to show kindness, deserved to be loved.
Jon was predeceased by his parents, Olin & Mildred (Spitler) Vanderberg; his sister, Marcia Ledbetter; and his beloved wife, W. Nadine Vanderberg, of whose early passing he would reflect, "It gets better, but it never gets good."
His legacy of honoring difference and championing humanity lives on in his children: his son, Robert Vanderberg (Jenn Valois) and grandson Otis; and his daughter, Dr. Laura Vanderberg (Dr. Andrew Fiordalis) and granddaughter Anya Nadine. He leaves behind a family taught to value their own unique gifts and the striking memory of a wry gap-toothed smile that lights up the room.
