Alvaro (Vavo) Pontes, a beloved husband, brother, uncle, and cousin passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 82.
Alvaro Pontes was born on January 12, 1943, in Fogo, Cabo Verde to Hipólito (NhoNho) Pontes and Maria (Tété) Baptista Pontes. He lived a life full of generosity, independence, and with a deep commitment and love to his family and the broader Cape Verdean community.
Vavo spent his life supporting immigrants as they transitioned to the United States to build new homes and futures. He carried out this work with kindness and compassion, helping thousands of families create opportunities for a fresh start in the USA.
Vavo is survived by his wife, Ana “Nazinha” Galvão Pontes, his siblings Idalina (Dala) Costa, Carmelita (Bibitcha) DePina, Mario (Tchany) Pontes, Antonieta Fontes, Iolanda Amado, Eugénio Pontes , Marieta Barbosa, José (Zezito) Pontes, Zelia Fernades, Goretti Pontes Macedo and their significant others. He was the favorite uncle and godfather to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his late brother, Amândio (Azevedo) Pontes.
