Brenda Jean Welch was born in Elkhorn, West Virginia on September 7th, 1941.
She was the fourth of twelve children born to the late Hatfield and Elizabeth Hairston. She attended Elkhorn High School and soon after followed her siblings, James Hairston and Shirley Henry in moving to Cambridge, Massachusetts at the age of eighteen.
On Saturday, April 11th, 2020 Brenda, affectionately known as “Tater” or “Nan-Nan” left this life to be with the Lord and departed loved ones.
Brenda had two daughters, Brenda J. Williams and Karen A. Joyce. On June 27th, 1992 she married Howard Victor Welch, a member of the United States Air Force and veteran of the Vietnam war.
Brenda was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cheering on Boston sports teams. Her most notable occupation was homemaker where she dutifully tended to her family and eagerly welcomed the additions of her grandchildren Nyomi Russell, Torey Whitfield and Dietrick Whitfield as well as her great grandchildren Marcus Hardmon and Sire Whitfield.
Brenda is survived by her husband Howard; daughters Brenda J. Williams (Robert) and Karen A. Joyce; grandchildren Nyomi Russell, Torey Whitfield and Dietrick Whitfield; great grandchildren Marcus Hardmon and Sire Whitfield; aunt Christine Spencer; sister Joyce Young (Powell); brother-in-law James Henry Sr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Her memory lives on in the hearts of her loved ones and she will be truly missed.
Even though at this point and time it is nearly impossible to gather and mourn the loss of a loved one, it is still possible for families and friends to be supportive and compassionate. May we suggest you reach out by telephone, email, or perhaps mailing them a card or leaving your words of sympathy on the funeral home website?
We are being especially cautious due to the uncertain situation with the outbreak. Thank you for your cooperation and please know that we stand ready to honor and celebrate the deceased who come into our care.
