Alexander “Alec” S. Macmillan III passed away at the age of 67 on February 20, 2020 at his home in Boston, Massachusetts. He died after a courageous battle with cancer. A proud Bostonian, Alec was born November 15, 1952 to Dr. Alexander “Sandy” Macmillan and Jeanne Macmillan Morse and grew up in Wayland, Massachusetts. The eldest of six children, Alec was an avid athlete, playing ice hockey, football and baseball throughout his childhood. He was a member of Belmont Hill School’s class of 1970 and Harvard University’s class of 1974. He went on to the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, class of 1980, where he met his late wife, Laurie King Macmillan. After Tuck, Alec went on to enjoy a lifelong career in investment management.

Having raised his three daughters in Portland, Oregon with his wife Laurie, Alec continued to be a devoted, loving father after Laurie’s passing from cancer in 2004. A true family man, Alec was actively involved in coaching each of his daughter’s youth hockey teams and frequently gathered his daughters for family dinners. He also enjoyed hiking the White Mountains with friends and extended family, clamming and sailing in Prince Edward Island in the summertime, exploring different parts of the world, playing in his men’s hockey league, and attending Boston Bruins and Harvard hockey games. Eventually, and to the thrill of his daughters, Alec found great love again with his second wife, Lucy Hart Graves. Together, Alec and Lucy enjoyed their last big adventure hiking the Tour de Mont Blanc on their honeymoon in 2019.

Alec is survived by his wife Lucy, along with his three daughters: Keely E. Macmillan of Charlestown, MA; Elspeth L. Macmillan of Boston, MA; and Madeleine M. Winrow and her husband Scott of Hoboken, NJ. He is also survived by his mother Jeanne and stepfather Fessenden “Fez” Morse, his four sisters Cameron, Alison, Anne, and Lucy, his brother James and James’ wife Victoria, as well as his three stepchildren, Izzy, Galen and Marvin Weber.

The memorial service originally planned for April 19th, 2020 in Belmont, MA  is being postponed to a future date that will be announced here.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations please be made in Alec’s honor to Massachusetts General Cancer Center ( and The Posse Foundation ( And for those looking for other ways to honor Alec's life, do what he loved best: spend time with family, go out for an ice skate, or get outside and enjoy nature.

My brother Alec was a wonderful man. His greatest achievements were the tremendous love he had for his his wives Laurie and Lucy, and his three amazing daughters. I loved him very very much, I will think of him every day, and will miss him always.

I was terribly saddened to read of the passing of Alec, whom I first met when he was 5. I was the family babysitter for a number of years, lucky enough to accompany Dr and Mrs Macmillan to the ancestral home on PEI. I dearly loved them all, especially , Jamie, who I cared for from his birth. My deepest condolences to Mrs Morse, known to me as Mrs Macmillan,at this verysad loss, and of course Alec’s siblings; Cam, Alison , Jamie , Lucy and Anne.
